Seagram Beverage Chief May Be Considering EMI Records Buyout Atlantic Records Seeks College Marketing Representatives
Yahoo News/Reuters has the story: Edgar Bronfman, head of Seagram Co. Ltd. may be considering a buyout of the troubled EMI Plc., whose catalog includes the Beatles and the Spice Girls. Last year EMI dismantled their American distribution, divesting most of their artists to affiliated labels.
Atlantic Records is seeking college marketing representatives in Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Providence, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Boulder/Denver, and Columbus OH. Applicants must be enrolled in college and willing to work 10-20 hours per week. This is an unpaid internship, but qualifies for college credit. Massive Library of Sound Effects Available Online New Digital Audio/MIDI Recording Software From

PG Music has recently released Powertracks Pro Audio 4.0, a professional, fully featured digital audio MIDI workstation for Windows. It seamlessly integrates digital audio/MIDI recording and built-in music notation on any Windows PC equipped with a soundcard. Features include real time or punch-in recording, up to 48 tracks of CD quality audio or MIDI, 44khz/16-bit sampling (or 22khz if desired), editing in Wave window, support for PG Music and 3rd party plugins, MIDI type 0 and 1 file support, SMPTE and MIDI time code, up to 960 ppq timebase. "Lilith Fair" Album Set For Release Tomorrow
A compilation of artists who have performed at Sarah McLachlan's "Lilith Fair" is set for release tomorrow. The album, titled, A Celebration of Women In Music will include songs by Sarah McLachlan, Tracy Bonham, Meredith Brooks, The Cardigans, Shawn Colvin, Paula Cole, Emmylou Harris, Susanna Hoffs, the Indigo Girls, Lhasa, Lisa Loeb, Tara McLean, Abra Moore, Joan Osborne, Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, Wild Strawberries and Victoria Williams.

Yamaha Introduces New Internet Audio Format
Yamaha has entered the already crowded field of file formats for audio distribution on the internet. Its called Sound VQ and it promises compression of audio at ratios of 1:10 and even 1:20. It requires a Sound VQ player (available on the Yamaha website for Windows and Macintosh). So now there are at least 10 different possible ways to put sound files on the web: Mpeg1, 2 and 3, Quicktime, MIDI, Beatnik (by Headspace Audio), Liquid Audio, .AU (Sun mu-law), Real Audio, AIFF, WAV, MOD and Macromedia Shockwave/shockwave Flash. Whew! And I'm sure I missed some! Next week, Musicians Online will be posting an in-depth report on sound file distribution on the web to help you sort through the confusing mass of choices out there.

Lou Reed on PBS' "Charlie Rose" and "American Masters" Sub Pop "Singles Club" Revived
Hopefully you got the chance to catch Lou Reed on Charlie Rose the other night. Lou was personal, open and surprisingly warm, given his generally satirical lyrical bent. Don't forget to catch Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart on your local PBS station at 10 PM Thursday, April 30.
Subpop Records has revived their "Singles Club". Members can join for either 6 or 12 months and receive a 7-inch colored vinyl Sub Pop single each month. Some of the bands that Sub Pop introduced to the world in this way have included the Smashing Pumpkins, Fugazi, Ween, Soundgarden, the Afghan Whigs, Luna... you get the picture.

Ovation recently introduced the Applause line of high quality entry level priced stringed instruments: The summit line of 6-string, 12-string and classical acoustic and acoustic-electric guitars, the mini smaller-scale guitars, the Applause mandolin, and the Applause Voyager, portable travelers guitar featuring a full-scale neck.
Active monitor maker Genelec has posted tutorials for home and professional studios. Included are tutorials on setting up your Genelec studio monitor speakers, flush mounting speakers to walls and subwoofer placement.
New for 1998 is a high-gloss finish on the tops of all models in the 300 and 400 Series. A gloss finish really makes spruce visually "pop," and also is easier to keep clean than a low-gloss, or "satin" finish, so this represents a considerable cosmetic and maintenance improvement for these series. The 300 series models are solid wood (mahogany) no-frills guitars with the classic Taylor look and feel for a low price. The next model up, the 400 series, is now made from an African wood called ovangkol, whose grain and tone resemble Indian rosewood. Of course, Taylor is continuing to produce all their other models up to and including high-end masters instruments, as work continues on their new 44,000+ square foot factory, scheduled to open in June of 1998.

ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers), the world's largest music performing rights organization, and Liquid Audio, the leading developer of secure online music delivery systems, today announced an unprecedented strategic alliance to advance the legal performance of music on the Internet. The initiative, which encourages, streamlines and simplifies music rights licensing and reporting, will benefit Web site creators as well as music writers, publishers and composers. Liquid Audio will work with ASCAP to encourage Web sites that use Liquid Audio's music distribution technology for the sale or preview of music over the Internet to secure the appropriate music performance licenses from ASCAP. Liquid Audio will handle automated rights reporting to ASCAP from the licensed sites and facilitate the collection and payment of royalties for music sold and played via the Internet, thus protecting the rights of composers and music publishers.
