Edward Sanders

Edward Sanders album, "Box of Letters features eleven songs that herald back to a time when sentimentality and love were at the top of the charts. Reminiscent of Paul mcCartney (and the Wings), 70's folk-pop, with sometimes a touch of Brian Eno for good measure, Sanders' songs are finely crafted, catchy works that deserve to be heard.

Sanders sings and plays guitar and bass on this album, while producing it himself. He gets help from fellow musicians John Van Nest (piano, vocals, guitars), Cat Gray (drums, synthesizers, strings), Bob Metzger (pedal steel guitar, dobro, guitar), and a violin trio consisting of Erika Walzac, Daryl Silverman and Bob Furgo

The most striking track on "Box of Letters" is the opening song of the same name. It brings to mind that Brian Eno sound/overlapping Paul McCartney yet demonstrates more originality than a lot of the other tracks on the album, although the 70's folk-pop love song feel does carry over the whole album. The subtle rhythm of "Meet Me At The Railway" provides an excellent platform for the endearing lyrics of the song and the sliding dobro and pedal steel guitar. "Flowers In the Rain" stands out as a track that really communicates the writer's sense of nostalgia and blends in well with the following closing track, "Summer's Gone."

"Box of Letters" is an album that may lean a little heavily on sentimentality, but stands up best when Sanders sheds his influences on tracks like the title track and "Flowers In the Rain".
